Major Arcana
Death
“I release what has run its course and make room for renewal.”
Upright
- transformation
- letting go
- closing a chapter
- renewal
- necessary release
Despite its name, Death rarely points to a literal ending — it's the card of transformation, of one chapter closing so that something truer can take its place. Change like this can feel disorienting because it asks you to release an identity, habit, or situation you've outgrown, even if letting go is uncomfortable. There's real relief on the other side of that release, but it requires trusting the process rather than clinging to what's already finished. When Death appears, something in your life is ready to be honored and released, making room for the renewal that naturally follows every ending.
Reversed
- resisting change
- fear of endings
- stagnation
- delayed transformation
Reversed, Death suggests resistance to a transformation that's already trying to happen — holding onto a relationship, job, or self-concept past its natural point, out of fear of what comes next. This resistance often creates more discomfort than the change itself would. Stagnation here isn't a permanent state, just a sign that release is being delayed. Consider what you're gripping out of fear rather than genuine need, and what it might feel like to loosen that grip just slightly.
