How it's calculated

The traditional method adds your birth month, day and full year together, then reduces the sum a digit at a time until it lands on one of the 22 Major Arcana. Many dates reduce through a pair of cards — both belong to you: one is the outer pattern of your life, the other the essence beneath it. A rare few dates (reducing through 19) carry three.

A worked example

Take 14 March 1990. Add the parts as they are written: 3 + 14 + 1990 = 2007. That is above 22, so reduce it a digit at a time — 2 + 0 + 0 + 7 = 9, The Hermit. Because 9 is already a single digit, the chain stops there and The Hermit alone is the birth card. A date like 29 November 1985 behaves differently: 11 + 29 + 1985 = 2025, which reduces to 9 as well, so it lands in the same place by a different road. When a sum reduces to a two-digit number first — say 16, The Tower — you keep that card AND its reduction, 1 + 6 = 7, The Chariot. Both are yours: the first is the pattern people see, the second is what drives it.

Common questions

Is a birth card the same as a star sign?

No. A star sign comes from where the sun sat on your birthday; a birth card comes from the numbers in the date itself. They are different systems and they often disagree — that is expected, not a mistake.

Why did I get two cards?

Most dates do. When the first sum reduces to a number between 10 and 22, you keep that card and the single digit it reduces to. Read the higher card as the outward pattern of your life and the lower one as the engine underneath it.

Does my birth card ever change?

It cannot. It is built from a date that never moves. The card of the day changes; this one is the fixed point you read the daily cards against.

What if my card is one of the frightening ones?

Death, The Tower and The Devil are the three people flinch at, and none of them predicts harm. In a birth position they describe a life shaped by endings and rebuilding, by sudden clarity, or by learning where your attachments own you. They are difficult teachers, not sentences.

Do I need an account to use this?
