Suit of Wands Meaning: All 14 Cards, Ace to King

5 min read

The suit of wands is the tarot's suit of action. It covers what you want to start, what you are willing to work for, and how much energy you have to do it. If a question is about ambition, creative projects, confidence or momentum, wands usually show up.

What the suit is about

Wands deal with the part of life that moves because you decided it should: a new job, a project you can't stop thinking about, a decision to speak up. The mood is warm, restless and forward-leaning. For how wands compare with the other three suits, see our guide to the four suits. This page stays inside wands.

Because the suit is about energy, its shadow is energy too: starting too much, burning out, or arguing for the sake of it.

The story from Ace to Ten

The Ace is the spark, an idea or impulse that has not been tested yet. The Two and Three move from planning to waiting for the first results. The Four is a pause to enjoy something that has taken shape. Then the suit turns harder: the Five is competition and noise, the Six is recognition, and the Seven is defending a position you have already earned.

The Eight is speed, things suddenly moving. The Nine is the tired person who has held on this long and has one more push to go. The Ten is the cost of success: too many commitments carried at once. Read the Ten as a question about what you can put down.

The four court cards

The Page is curious and new at it, often a message or a first try. The Knight charges ahead, fast and sometimes careless. The Queen is confident, warm and good at holding attention. The King leads by vision and knows when to hand work to others. In a reading they can be people, but they are just as often the style you are being asked to use.

When wands fill a spread

Several wands in one spread suggest that the situation is about doing, not feeling or thinking it over. Ask where your energy is going and whether it points at one thing. A spread with wands and almost no swords or cups can also say you are acting before you have thought it through.

All 14 wands in one line each

Ace of Wands is a new spark. Two of Wands is a choice between staying and going further. Three of Wands is watching first results come in. Four of Wands is a stable base worth celebrating. Five of Wands is friction and competing ideas.

Six of Wands is recognition earned. Seven of Wands is standing your ground. Eight of Wands is fast movement. Nine of Wands is weary persistence. Ten of Wands is a load that has grown too heavy.

Page of Wands is enthusiasm with little experience. Knight of Wands is bold, fast and impatient. Queen of Wands is confidence that draws people in. King of Wands is leadership with a clear direction.

Reversed meanings are in the upright and reversed guide. To see which wand shows up for you, draw a card of the day.
